Thailand, Bali or Vietnam in December and January: Best Winter Holiday from India

Peak season for a quick escape from India — but only one of the three has reliable weather in both months. What December and January actually look like in Thailand, Bali and Vietnam, and who each suits.

December and January are peak travel months for Indians looking for a quick international escape. With pleasant weather in parts of Southeast Asia, Christmas and New Year celebrations, and relatively easy connectivity from India, Thailand, Bali and Vietnam are three obvious choices.

But which one actually makes the most sense? The answer depends on whether you want beaches, a honeymoon, sightseeing, food or a budget-friendly trip.

Thailand in December and January

Thailand is arguably the best all-rounder for a winter holiday.

December marks Thailand's cooler season, with good conditions across much of the country. If you're considering visiting Thailand in December, the Tourism Authority of Thailand notes that both the Andaman and Gulf coasts are attractive during this month. January is particularly good for beaches, with clear water and favourable conditions for swimming, diving and snorkelling.

You can combine Bangkok with Phuket or Krabi, or add islands such as Phi Phi.

Best for: beaches, island hopping, nightlife, families and a first international trip.

Why choose Thailand?

Thailand gives you the most variety in one trip. You can spend a few days exploring Bangkok and then switch completely to a beach holiday.

For Indian passport holders, Thailand is also particularly convenient: the Thai Embassy in New Delhi currently confirms a 30-day visa exemption for Indian ordinary passport holders, effective from 15 September 2026 until further announcement.

Bali in December and January

Bali looks tempting during the winter holidays, but there's one important catch: December and January fall within Bali's wet season.

Indonesia Tourism states that, for Bali and most of Indonesia, the wet season generally runs from November to March, while April to October is the drier period. If you are planning a trip to Bali in December or Bali in January, keep in mind that rain showers are more frequent during these months.

That doesn't mean Bali is a bad idea. You can still have sunny spells, and the island works beautifully for villas, spas, cafés, temples and romantic experiences.

However, if your dream is a completely beach-focused honeymoon with guaranteed sunshine, this isn't Bali's strongest season.

Best for: honeymoon, private villas, wellness, cafés and culture.

Where should you go?

For a winter trip, build your itinerary around Ubud, Seminyak or Canggu and Uluwatu, rather than making the entire holiday dependent on water activities.

Vietnam in December and January

Tran Quoc Pagoda on West Lake, Hanoi
Hanoi and the north run cool and misty in December and January — which is its own kind of appeal.

Vietnam is the most interesting option if you want culture, food, cities and varied landscapes rather than just beaches. But Vietnam's weather changes dramatically from north to south.

Northern destinations such as Hanoi and Halong Bay can be cool, cloudy and misty in December and January. If you are researching Vietnam in December or Vietnam in January, Central Vietnam can also be wet, while southern Vietnam enjoys clearer, warmer weather during these months.

For a winter beach escape, Phu Quoc is particularly attractive. Vietnam Tourism describes December and January as a sublime period for the island, with hot, sunny weather and clear skies.

Best for: food, culture, road trips, couples, and beaches combined with sightseeing.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Thailand if you want the safest all-round winter holiday with beaches, nightlife, shopping and easy travel.

Choose Bali if you're planning a romantic honeymoon and care more about villas, experiences and relaxation than guaranteed beach weather.

Choose Vietnam if you want a more experience-driven trip with incredible food, culture, cities and some beach time.

What about budget?

For a 5–7 night mid-range trip for two from India, a rough planning range is:

  • Thailand: ₹80,000–₹1.3 lakh
  • Vietnam: ₹80,000–₹1.3 lakh
  • Bali: ₹90,000–₹1.5 lakh

December and New Year dates can push prices considerably higher, especially for flights and hotels. Booking early is particularly important if you're travelling between 20 December and 5 January.

Final verdict

If you're travelling from India in December or January, here's the simplest way to decide:
